Rebar vs. Mesh vs. Fibre Reinforcement
Different projects need different reinforcement:
- Rebar (reinforcing steel bars) – the standard for structural slabs, driveway sections carrying vehicles, steps and walls. Common residential sizes are 10M and 15M bars on 12 to 24 inch grids.
- Welded wire mesh – used in thinner slabs and walkways where distributed crack control matters more than structural strength. Only works if it is held at mid-slab elevation, not laid flat on the ground.
- Macro synthetic fibres – mixed into the concrete itself for shrinkage crack control, often combined with rebar in exterior flatwork.
Placement Is Everything

Rebar at the bottom of a slab does almost nothing. Steel needs to sit in the lower third of the slab on chairs so tension forces are carried properly. One of the most common shortcuts we see in failed concrete around Barrie is mesh or rebar trampled flat into the subgrade during the pour.
Spacing, laps and cover
Bars are spaced to the design grid, overlapped at splices, and kept the right distance from edges and from the soil so the concrete protects the steel from corrosion. Tie wire holds the grid through the pour.
Joints still matter
Reinforcement does not stop cracking – concrete shrinks. It keeps cracks tight and load transfer intact. Control joints are still planned and cut so movement happens where you want it.
What Does Rebar Installation Cost?
Rebar pricing depends on slab size, bar size and spacing, and how much cutting around penetrations is involved. Driveways and garage slabs carrying vehicles typically need heavier grids than a patio. Common Questions
Do all concrete projects need rebar?
No. Thin decorative sections and some walkways do fine with mesh or fibre. Anything carrying vehicles, spanning gaps or supporting structure should be reinforced with rebar sized for the load.
What size rebar is used for a driveway?
Residential driveways in Ontario commonly use 10M or 15M bars on a 12 to 18 inch grid, depending on soil conditions and expected loads. We confirm at the estimate stage.
Can you add rebar to an existing slab?
Not into hardened concrete, but options exist: a bonded overlay with reinforcement, or removal and repour where the slab has failed badly. We assess which makes sense during the site visit.
Does rebar rust and stain the concrete?
Proper concrete cover protects the steel. Rust staining happens when steel sits too close to the surface – another reason correct placement matters.
